The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has carried out inspection campaigns to ensure the compliance of electrical appliance stores across the country with a decision barring the import and sale of high-glow lamps.
 
The inspection campaigns resulted in the confiscation of 8,968 high-glow lamps. The electrical appliance stores that violated the decision were fined in line with article 6 of law number (8) of 2008 on consumer protection. The law prohibits the sale, display and promotion of substandard, counterfeit and fraudulent products. A product is considered fraudulent if it fails to meet the standards or has expired.
 
Violations of law number (8) of 2008 are penalized by administrative closures and fines ranging between QR 3,000 and QR 1 million, in line with the applicable consumer protection laws.
 
The decision to ban the import and sale of high-glow lamps is aimed at preserving the country’s energy resources, promoting sustainability and protecting the environment in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The decision is in implementation of the standards imposed on goods and products manufactured or imported from abroad, in order to protect the health and safety of individuals and society.
 
The Ministry stated that it is determined to protect consumer rights and will intensify its inspection campaigns to crack down on all violations of the consumer protection law. The Ministry also said it will refer violators of laws and ministerial decrees to the competent authorities, who will take appropriate action against perpetrators in order to protect the rights of consumers.
