H.E. Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassem bin Mohammed Al-Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Economy and Commerce, met with Mr. John Tecklenburg, Mayor of Charleston, South Carolina. The meeting took place on the sidelines of Qatar’s Economic Roadshow in Charleston, South Carolina.
Discussions touched on the prospects for joint cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields and the promotion of bilateral relations. The officials also discussed cooperation prospects between the private sector in both countries given the importance that Qatar dedicates to the private sector and its role in the economic diversification and development process. Discussions also touched on investments opportunities and projects in both countries.
US-Qatari bilateral investment and economic relations have grown significantly since the signing of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement – or TIFA – back in 2004.
The US is one of the most important Qatar’s trading partners, with a volume of US$6 billion, and is the primary source for Qatari imports, with 16% of Qatar’s imports coming from the US in 2017.
More than 650 American companies currently operate in Qatar, of which 117 are fully owned U.S companies.
