November 13, 2012

The Ministry of Business and Trade oversaw during the last period of the year 2012, and specifically between January and October 2012, the implementation of 14 recalls for different products in the market, in coordination with the suppliers and traders in the various commercial sectors. The recalls that included 11 recalls for more than 17,500 cars from different agencies in the state have stated of course the reason of the defect and its influence on the consumer.
Based on that, the Consumer Protection Department has followed the necessary recalls procedures by informing the consumers of the defects and mentioning the service centers that they should visit to repair such defects for free, through publishing the recalls announcement in the local newspapers.
These actions were taken by the department as a way to protect the consumers’ rights and control the quality of the goods and services offered in the market in order to preserve the safety and health of the consumers, and as an implementation of the provisions of Article No. (13) of Law No. (8) for the year 2008 on consumer protection, which stipulates that the supplier shall guarantee that the item or service provided to the consumer matches with the approved standards, and should ask about the non-compliance of these items or services with the conditions related to public health and safety. These recalls come also in the frame of the implementation of the provisions of Article No. (14) of the same Act, which stipulates that ” the supplier is obliged to notify Consumer Protection Department and consumers of any case related to finding manufacturing defect or any other defect that may cause damage or endanger consumers. It shall also be committed to recall all faulty commodities and to announce so immediately.”
The following table shows the recalls that were announced during the mentioned period (January – October 2012):
