

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry organized a roundtable with several companies operating in the tourism sector to discuss key challenges and ways of addressing them. Present at the roundtable representing the Ministry was Mr. Saleh bin Majid Al-Khulaifi, Assistant Undersecretary for Industrial Affairs and Business Development. The roundtable is part of a series of meetings that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has taken the initiative to organize, with the private sector, with a view to gathering vital data and feedback through informed discussions to identify challenges and obstacles in several key sectors in the country, including the tourism sector. This initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to supporting these sectors, providing all means of support to the companies operating within them, facilitating current procedures, learning about the best global practices, and devising appropriate solutions that would create a conducive business environment in the State of Qatar. The current chapter of the roundtable, focused on Tourism, delved into critical matters that affect operators in Qatar, including the balance that must be struck between healthy competition and the presence of monopolies in the tourism sector and the impact this has on its sustainable growth. The meeting also discussed the necessary infrastructure improvements that need to be in place to support the growth and diversification of tourism in Qatar. Looking at ways to best market and position Qatar, through these strategies, as a leading global tourist destination was also explored, considering strategic planning and collaboration with key stakeholders as powerful enablers for Qatar’s tourism sector. The main obstacles hindering foreign direct investment to Qatar were also discussed, along with strategic measures that should be put into place to make Qatar more attractive. Moreover, the discussion covered the role that the government and the private sector can play to enhance and promote Qatar as a viable destination, not only for tourism, but also for foreign investment. The meeting also highlighted a number of proposals being currently reviewed that aim to support the success of projects in this vital sector and mitigate potential challenges.
