Qatar Hosts Ministerial Meetings of GCC Committees for Commercial and Industrial Cooperation and Ministerial Committee for Standardisation Affairs

On Thursday, October 31, 2024, Qatar hosted the 53rd Industrial Cooperation Committee meeting, the 67th Commercial Cooperation Committee meeting, and the 8th Ministerial Committee for Standardisation Affairs, as well as a consultative meeting, in Doha. The sessions were chaired by H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Thani, Qatar's Minister of Commerce and Industry, with the participation of GCC Ministers of Commerce and Industry and H.E. Mr. Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council. In his opening remarks, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Thani warmly welcomed the Ministers to Qatar, emphasising that the Ministerial Committees play a critical role in advancing joint economic coordination toward achieving full GCC economic integration. H.E. highlighted the pivotal role of the Industrial Cooperation Committee in driving GCC economic integration by aligning initiatives across key industrial sectors and formulating policies that boost the Gulf’s industrial competitiveness and sustainability. These coordinated efforts elevate production capacity and product quality, bolstering the GCC economy’s global standing. In the Commercial Cooperation Committee meeting, H.E. commended the significant advancements in the trade sector achieved in recent years through dedicated joint cooperation. On the sidelines of the Commercial Cooperation Committee meeting, members convened with H.E. Mr. Jonathan Reynolds, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to review the outcomes of recent Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the GCC and the United Kingdom held in London. Additionally, committee members met with H.E. Mr. Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Minister for Trade, where they formally signed the final statement of the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the GCC and New Zealand.  In the Ministerial Committee meeting on Standardisation Affairs, H.E. Minister of Commerce and Industry underscored the urgency of strengthening and aligning standardisation and quality measures amidst rapid advancements in specifications and standards, alongside the challenges presented by open markets. He called for accelerated, unified action across the GCC to update legislation, technical regulations, and specifications, aiming to harmonise standards that address member states' needs and deepen integration in this essential sector. In a related gathering, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Thani led a consultative meeting between GCC Ministers of Commerce and Industry and the Presidents of GCC Federations and Chambers of Commerce, joined by H.E. Secretary General of the GCC. The leaders reviewed critical issues and recommendations raised by GCC Federation and Chamber Presidents and took decisive actions to address them.
